Having launched over 35 startups in our decade of operation, we’ve been fortunate to be involved with our share of ‘unicorns’ (Palo Alto Networks, Nimble Storage) and really nice white stallions (Sumo Logic, Trifacta and Snowflake Computing). Given the wide range of companies we’ve worked with — and their equally wide range of success/failure — we’re often asked to sum up the characteristics of a successful startup. So here goes.

In the fast-paced startup world, it’s easy to fall into the habit of acting quickly rather than thoughtfully. Of course, forward progress is always the goal but not at the expense of building a sustainable business. As you move through the chaotic early days, pay attention to the decisions you make about your product, team and operations; think about how those decisions will impact you not just tomorrow, but five years down the road.

Here are five ways to ensure that the startup you’re building will have a lasting market presence.

Kenneth Cukier, The Economist’s Data Editor, thinks that with data quantity also comes an increase in data quality. With more data, we are able to extract more information from it.

Big data enables us to learn and to process information faster. In 2003, with the computer capabilities at that time, it would take about 10 years to sequence the human genome. In 2013, it took about 2-3 days. Other activities like speech recognition, text translation, and self-driving cars are getting more precise the more data we have. Now, we can collect more information than we ever could before and we no longer need to work with samples only.

1. No te rindas

This skill may not sound sexy, but there is absolutely no way an entrepreneur can succeed without obsessively maintaining updated lists of all resources and projects that will contribute to his or her endeavor’s success. How Argentina is leveraging its talent & resources to become the next outsourcing destination.

While countries such as India and China have earned reputations as leading destinations for global outsourcing, another country has rapidly emerged as a more attractive option. Argentina has battled a frail economy in recent years to develop a thriving outsourcing ecosystem that rivals the traditional locations, and with a wide array of benefits and advantages, the country has positioned itself to become the next global outsourcing hub for tech teams, projects and staffing.

1. Lower costs 

If you want a reliable, cost effective software development solution, look no further than Argentina. Since the Argentine peso was devalued in 2002, the Argentinean software development market has become very cost competitive as a result. For example, according to SourcingLine and PayScale the wage for an Argentinean software engineer is approximately 19.1 % of an US engineer. Put simply, for every US in-house resource you can have nearly 5 for the same price in Argentina. Furthermore, the cost for a Senior Software Engineer in Argentina is approximately  21% of the comparable cost in the United States and for an IT project manager the pay ratio is around 32.5%. In addition, when these percentages are compared with other Latin American outsourcing locations the difference is even more favorable to Argentina. For example, a Senior Software Engineer’s salary in Chile represents 37.4% of the US-based resource; the same figure in Mexico is 36% and 49% in Brazil.
